Byron Coathup lives and works on Bundjalung country which intersects with the Qld and NSW state borders. He engages in personal and business related creative activities. These may include collaborating with artists, art cooperatives, councils, festivals and private clients. He continues to develop and deliver an extensive range of creative projects for public and private spaces.

Byron’s conceptual framework is project-driven. He reflects on current surroundings and reflects on the connection to the past. The notion of place and memory holds a pivotal position in his work, which extends to his curatorial practice, often presented work outside of traditional gallery settings in rediscovered spaces and site-specific installations. Byron's collaborative projects are motivated to foster a collaborative and communal shared spirit. His artwork and projects are built on the foundations of collecting, re-purposing and play.

Byron has evolved his career as an independent project curator, which has led him to understand the importance of providing a supportive role for artists and seeking alternate opportunties. Byron regards this support as a fundamental component in allowing artists to produce conceptually rich and exciting site-specific outcomes.

Byron has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at Testing Grounds (Melbourne), Byron School of Art (Mullumbimby) The Walls Art Space (Gold Coast), Gallery HOTA, M-Arts (Murwillumbah) and Falls Festival (Byron Bay). Byron has undertaken major art projects for Festival 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Bleach* Arts Festival 2015-2020.

Byron works as a Public Art Curator and Project Manager for Consulting Agency, Art-Public. He also shares his time as Director of POLLY Murwillumbah with his partner.

Byron is active in his local creative community and interested in continuing to seek new ways to collaborate with private enterprises and local organisations. He is a Creative Caldera Non-For Profit organisation member and is the acting Treasurer and Public Officer.
